After MONTHS of preparation and execution, the upstairs bathroom is complete. It still needs a bit of dressing up and detail work but I couldn't wait to present a sneak peek:
After living with a non-functional shower for over two years, its a dream come true to have it working again. This is the new hardware and on the right is the rod that leads up to the rain shower head. The reflection is the octagonal window which got some love with a fresh coat of paint and new extra wide trim.
Our dear and exceptionally talented friend Vivian of Green Cottage Gallery in Shakespeare, made the mirror for our new bathroom. It is a jewel. The rustic frame warms up the modern bathroom and the wood tones with white and grey stain pick up the colours in the marble floor perfectly. We found the lotus flower pendants over a year ago in a tiny shop in Conestogo. We had always intended to put them in the living room somewhere but after we made the decision to update the bathroom, we knew immediately where they would go.
We removed the old cast iron tub (a shame really since it was slightly art deco and lovely in itself) and the dated, low, curved bulkhead and used the entire space as a walk-in shower.
The focal point of the room is the floor to ceiling wall of white glass mosaic. It sparkles and looks like a wall of water. It perfectly complements the fixed glass wall opposite.
We went with a large number of different tiles in the bathroom (much to the delight of our contractor). The floors have 2 different tiles: 12"X12" calacatta marble (the same stone in our kitchen backsplash) placed in a staggered pattern. Each row of these tiles is separated by 3 rows of the same stone in mosaic for a bit of extra pattern. The walls are 4 different white ceramics: a 6"X6" square as a 'baseboard', a pencil to top them off followed by 8"X3" tiles in a subway pattern to chair rail height finished off by a hand made moulding tile. The floor of the shower is yet another tile: white river rock to complete effect of standing in waterfall in the shower area.
